The Decreasing Diversity of Species of Staple Food Crops

Recently, the number of species of staple food crops grown in any great quantity has decreased precipitously: it is estimated that 75% of the genetic diversity of agriculture crops has been lost in the last century (Harvesting). This is in large part due to cultivation techniques introduced during the Green Revolution, but more recently also due to the development of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) technology. While the growing of extensive monocultures can make  farming easier and has in many cases led to increased crop yield, it has negatively impacted the environment and has the potential to create results that will eliminate the gains it has created. Some scientists even predict that this loss of horticultural diversity could become the cause of global famine in the future.
